PROCEDURE

BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.

1.Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label previously installed to indicate that this TSB reprogramming has already been done.

2.Using the MUT-III, verify that the vehicle's ECU part number is listed in the table in Step 9. If the Software P/N is the same as or higher than the Software P/N in the table, the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this concern. Do not continue with this bulletin procedure. Refer to Group 13 in the appropriate service manual to diagnose the DTC.

3.Use the MUT-III to erase all DTCs set in the PCM.

4.MEDIC-II ONLY. Verify that your MEDIC-II is at download M121 or higher.

NOTE: Dealers using MEDIC-II will not receive a reflash
CD. The reflash data will be sent electronically.

a.If the download is M121 or higher, go to step 6.

b.If the download version is less than M121, force a download to the MEDIC-II as follows:
a.On the MEDIC-II main screen, click on "Maintenance".
b.Click on "Download".

5.Scan Tool Viewer (STV) ONLY. Verify that your MUT-III is at STV Version 14 or higher, and that it has the most current version of the reprogramming database:

a.Select "Special Function", then select "ECU Reprogramming."

b.Select "Database File Display". The database version is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure the database version is N06081 or greater.

c.If the database version is N06081 or greater, reprogram the PCM as described in
Step 7 for CAN-FLASH VEHICLES ONLY or Step 8 for K-LINE FLASH VEHICLES ONLY.

d .If the database version is less than N06081, you must transfer the new reprogramming data from the Reflash Update CD 8/06 to the MUT-III hard drive as follows:

a.Install Reflash Update CD 8/06 into the PC's DVD-ROM drive.

b.Follow the instructions on the screen. The system will automatically transfer the reprogramming data onto the PC's hard drive.

6.MEDIC-II and STV Transfer the reprogramming data from the MEDIC-II laptop to the memory card as follows (Use the port on the left side of the MEDIC-II laptop):

a.Select the "MUT-III STV" button.

b.Select "Special function".

c.Select "ECU Reprogramming".

d.Select "Memory Card Transfer".

When the memory card data transfer is complete, remove the memory card from the laptop and install it
in the VCI. Then go to Step 7 for CAN-FLASH VEHICLES ONLY or Step 8 FOR K-LINE FLASH
VEHICLES.

7.CAN-FLASH VEHICLES ONLY:

IMPORTANT
: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE MEDIC-II LAPTOP. DO NOT USE VCI STANDALONE REPROGRAMMING.

The following equipment is required for PCM reprogramming on CAN-Flash vehicles:

•MEDIC-II PC
•Reprogramming Database on DVD-ROM (Reflash Update CD 8/06 or later for this concern)
•VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824
•MUT-III main harness A (blue) - MB991910
•USB 2.0 cable - MB991827
•"Engine Compartment/Control Module" labels - p/n MSSF-024G-00

Connect this equipment in the same manner as for normal vehicle diagnosis. When reprogramming a CAN-Flash vehicle, the VCI and MEDIC-II laptop must be connected. DO NOT use VCI Standalone on CAN-Flash vehicles.

a.In the MUT-III System Select menu, click on the car symbol at the bottom of the screen.

Select VIN. Then type in the VIN.

b.Connect the VCI to the vehicle. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE LAPTOP.

c.Select "Special Function."
d.Select "ECU reprogramming."
e.Select "Automatic Reprogramming (CAN)."
f.Select Engine and Transmission, then click on the check mark.

A message will advise you that the system will "Automatic Search the data."
Click on the check mark to continue.
If the PCM is already reprogrammed for this concern, this screen will display. If this message displays, do not continue with this reprogramming procedure.

DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.
g.The CAN database screen will display.

(If more than one row is displayed in the table, select the appropriate ECU part number.)

Click on the check mark to begin reprogramming.

NOTE: It will take up to 10 minutes to complete the reprogramming.

c.Connect the VCI to the vehicle.

d.IMPORTANT!
Lancer and Outlander models equipped with ABS: With the ignition key OFF, unplug the ABS fuse (7.5 amp fuse in the junction box in the
passenger compartment). Refer to the service manual for exact fuse location in the box.

e.Reprogram the PCM, using "Automatic reprogramming" on the VCI. It will take up to 20 minutes to complete the reprogramming.

DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.

If the message "ECU at Current Level of VCI" appears, the PCM did not reprogram. Verify that the ROM ID is the same as the ROM ID listed in the table in Step 9.

•If the ROM ID is the same or higher than the ROM ID in the table, the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this concern. Do not continue with this reprogramming procedure.

•If it is not, verify that the correct database update is in the MUT-III. Verify the correct database was transferred to the memory card, and that the memory card is properly installed in the VCI.

9.After reprogramming, the new ECU part number and software part number will display. Verify that they are the same as those listed below. Note this information.
