PURPOSE

On affected vehicles, some freeze frame data items may be unavailable to diagnose Diagnostic Trouble Codes for misfire conditions (DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, or P0306). If this freeze-frame data is unavailable, reprogramming the PCM as described in this bulletin will enable all freeze frame data to be read by the MUT-III, to ensure proper diagnosis and repair.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All 2005-2006 models except Raider

PROCEDURE

BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.

1.If a misfire DTC is set in the PCM:

a.If the cause of the misfire DTC is easily identified, perform repairs as necessary. Then go to Step 2 to reprogram the PCM to enable all freeze frame data.

b.If the cause of the misfire DTC is not easily identified, go to Step 2 to reprogram the PCM to enable all freeze frame data. Then test drive the vehicle to duplicate the customer's concern (misfire DTC will reset), and use the freeze frame data to diagnose the DTC.

2.Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label previously installed to indicate that this TSB reprogramming has already been done.

3.Using the MUT-III, verify that the vehicle's ECU part number is listed in the table in Step 8. If the Software P/N is the same as or higher than the Software P/N in the table, the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this concern. Do not continue with this bulletin procedure.

4.Use the MUT-
III to erase all DTCs set in the PCM.

5.Verify that your MUT-III is at STV Version 13.1 or higher, and that it has the most current version of the reprogramming database:

a.Select "Special Function", then select "ECU Reprogramming."

b.Select "Database File Display". The database version is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure the database version is N06031 or greater.

c.If the database version is N06031 or greater, reprogram the PCM as described in
Step 6 (for CAN- Flash vehicles) or Step 7 (for K-Line Flash vehicles).

d.If the database version is less than N06031, you must transfer the new reprogramming data from the Reflash Update CD 4/06 to the MUT-III hard drive as follows:

(1)Install Reflash Update CD 4/06 into the PC's DVD-ROM drive.

(2)Follow the instructions on the screen. The system will automatically transfer the reprogramming data onto the PC's hard drive.

6.CAN-FLASH VEHICLES ONLY :

IMPORTANT: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE MUT-III LAPTOP. DO NOT USE VCI STANDALONE REPROGRAMMING.

The following equipment is required for PCM reprogramming on CAN-Flash vehicles:

•MUT-III PC
•Reprogramming Database on DVD-ROM (Reflash Update CD 4/06 or later for this concern)
•VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824
•MUT-III main harness A (blue) - MB991910
•USB 2.0 cable - MB991827
•"Engine Compartment/Control Module" labels - p/n MSSF-024G-00

Connect this equipment in the same manner as for normal vehicle diagnosis. When reprogramming a CAN-Flash vehicle, the VCI and MUT-III laptop must be connected. DO NOT use VCI Standalone on CAN-Flash vehicles.

a.In the MUT-III System Select menu, click on the car symbol at the bottom of the screen.

Select VIN. Then type in the VIN.

b.Connect the VCI to the vehicle. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE LAPTOP.

c.Select "Special Function."
d.Select "ECU reprogramming."
e.Select "Automatic Reprogramming (CAN)."
f.Select Engine and Transmission, then click on the check mark.

A message will advise you that the system will "Automatic Search the data."
Click on the check mark to continue.
If the PCM is already reprogrammed for this concern, this screen will display. If this message displays, do not continue with this reprogramming procedure.

DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.
g.The CAN database screen will display.

(If more than one row is displayed in the table, select the appropriate ECU part number.)

Click on the check mark to begin reprogramming.

NOTE: It will take up to 10 minutes to complete the reprogramming.
h.This message will display when the reprogramming is successfully completed.

Go to Step 8 to complete this bulletin procedure.

7.K-LINE FLASH VEHICLES ONLY:

a.If you just transferred the new reprogramming data from the Reflash Update CD 4/06 to the MUT-III hard drive, now transfer the reprogramming data from the MUT-III laptop to the memory card. (Use the port on the left side of the MUT-III laptop.) Select ECU Reprogramming, then Memory Card Transfer. A status bar will display while the data is loading into the memory card.

When the memory card data transfer is complete, remove the memory card from the laptop and install it in the VCI.

b.Connect the following equipment in the same manner as for normal vehicle diagnosis:
•MUT-III PC
•Reprogramming Database on DVD-ROM (Reflash Update CD 4/06 or later for this concern)
•VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824
•MUT-III main harness B (red) - MB991911
•Endeavor & 2005 Galant models only: MUT-III main harness A (blue) - MB991910
•Outlander & Montero models only: 12-13 pin adapter MB991855
•USB 2.0 cable - MB991827

c.Connect the VCI to the vehicle.

d.Disconnect the MUT-III laptop.

e.IMPORTANT!
Lancer, Outlander, and Evolution models equipped with ABS: With the ignition key OFF, unplug the ABS fuse (7.5 amp fuse in the junction box in the
passenger compartment). Refer to the service manual for exact fuse location in the box.

f.Reprogram the PCM, using "Automatic reprogramming" on the VCI. It will take up to 20 minutes to complete the reprogramming.

DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.

If the message "ECU at Current Level of VCI" appears, the PCM did not reprogram. Verify that the ROM ID is the same as the ROM ID listed in the table in Step 7.

•If the ROM ID is the same or higher than the ROM ID in the table, the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this concern. Do not continue with this reprogramming procedure.

•If it is not, verify that the correct database update is in the MUT-III. Verify the correct database was transferred to the memory card, and that the memory card is properly installed in the VCI.

8.After reprogramming, the new ECU part number and software part number will display. Verify that they are the same as those listed below. Note this information.

9.Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect the MUT-III from the vehicle. Wait at least 10 seconds, then start the engine to verify proper operation.

10.Using a ball-point pen, enter the appropriate PCM part number, vendor number, ROM ID, this TSB number (TSB-06-13-005), your dealer code, and the current date on the Engine Compartment and Control Module Label (part no. MSSF-024G-00).

11.Carefully remove all dirt and oil from a vacant area near the VECI label on the underside of the hood, and affix the Engine Compartment label.

12.Affix the Control Module Label to the PCM.

13.Lancer, Outlander, and Evolution models equipped with ABS: Reconnect the ABS fuse. Confirm no DTCs are set.
